McGuyver vs. McSquirrel…Battle of Wits

McGuyver has been engaged in an ongoing battle of wits with the squirrel population in our yard…one squirrel in particular is very naughty.  McGuyver has tried various tricks, trying to keep him out of our flat sunflower seed feeder. He has tried to catch him in the act, only to find that McSquirrel is “faster than a speeding bullet”…He has wired up the feeder to keep McSquirrel from knocking the feeder on the ground, only to find McSquirrel is “more powerful than a locomotive”..and…  He has hung the feeder waaaay out on a limb…but.., you guessed it… McSquirrel can “leap tall buildings in a single bound”.  Today we watched our nemesis jump ,yet one more time ,from the  tree limb onto the squirrel protector and into the feeder..McGuyver said a few choice words and went out to the garage.  I figured he was just so damn mad he was finding something to take out his frustrations on, but I looked out and saw McGuyver frantically retrofitting a garbage can lid to fit just above the feeder…Yes, McGuyver has stooped to using our garbage can lid. He figured that he needed something much bigger to stop that nasty squirrel.

Den took the can lid out, hung it just above the feeder …..and waited.  He didn’t have to wait long…McSquirrel must have been peeking from behind a bush, because he was right back up the tree..and leaped onto the lid..HOWEVER, this time he slid off back onto the ground.

We were very skeptical that this fix was going to really keep this rascal out of the feeder, so we continued to watch his antics, as he kept going back up the tree…and kept sliding off the lid to the ground.

McGuyver and I were watching all of this with much glee.  McSquirrel was totally puzzled by this turn of events and sat on the ground looking up at the feeder, as if to say,”What the Hell????”  I do have a sinking feeling that this renegade will figure a way to somehow defeat us.

Today it was warm, muggy and it rained some.  Dennis finished cutting up the tree and hauled it back to our woodpile.  We have lots of wood now, but the problem is that a lot of states don’t want us to bring in any of our good Illinois firewood because of the Ash Bore…

Our grandkids are coming to spend the night, but with this rain I think they will be camped in front of our big new HD TV and watch DVD’s…They will have to fight Grandpa for the TV at 7Pm, when the Chicago Blackhawks play Philadelphia in game 4 of the Stanley Cup.  They may have to cover their ears too.

Fairly boring blog, but such is our life right now.  Kind of a depressing day.  Between the stock market taking a dive and watching the poor oil covered Pelicans in the Gulf, I’m ready to slit my wrists…JUST KIDDING!! Please do not call 911!!  “The sun will come out tomorrow….” , right? Thanks for tolerating my strange blog….See ya again Sunday!!

  3. We do battle with the squirrels on a daily basis as well. Years ago I had a cage & would catch the little fellows & take them back to the bush but I had a sneaky feeling they were finding their way back to our front yard.......& they were. I sprayed a little orange paint on one fellows tail & sure enough 3 days later I had a little orange tailed squirrel in the cage again!!!!
