Recovering from flu, busy weekend, and juror # 6…WHEW!!

May I please get off of this wild ride now??? Last week was virtually lost to me..You don’t get much social life while hovering in the bathroom and pronating on the couch…Beginning to recover, we had made a date with Uncle Jr.and Aunt Jeanette waaaay back in March..We were to attend a concert  called  the “made in America Tour” at the Paramount Theatre in Aurora…Uncle Jr. purchased these tickets back in March.  The concert was in honor of all that served in the armed forces, and the proceeds went to the Honor Flight Chicago , an organization that sends WWII vets to Washington D.C. to see the new memorial to them.  Uncle Jr. took this flight back in 2008…

…It’s good he did that…His health is not as good now….So, Sunday, Dennis was our driver and he took us downtown to the theater for the great show…

The performance featured Ricky Lee and the Mustangs, a country group ….and also a group resembling the Andrew Sisters, called the Legacy Girls….What a show!!

One of the vets got asked to dance to the music…not a dry eye in the house…. And of course the song “Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy of Company B” was the big hit!!

Left is Medal of Honor recipient, James Allen Lynch…He is a Vietnam Vet who carried 3 of his wounded comrades to safety in the midst of heavy enemy fire…Just to be in the the same room with sooo many veterans of all wars was unbelievable…Everyone was shaking Uncle Jr.’s hand, and even Dennis’s hand, for serving our country…I actually got the “snot nosed” cry a couple times…. Thanks, Uncle Jr., for letting us be your very proud escorts to this fabulous performance…

Sooooo…Monday morning I reported to the DeKalb County Courthouse in Sycamore IL….I have been called to be a potential juror 3 times in about 12 years…and every time (including this one) I get chosen for the jury…WHAT????

I love the old courthouses..We see lots of them when we travel through Texas…Most of those, however, are still flying the Confederate flag along with the Union flag..As you can see, the courthouse of us “Yankees” is totally different…We saw the Civil War from a different viewpoint…

Well, I reported to the courthouse Monday at 9:30 AM sharp.  There were 52 of us that morning..and none looked all that thrilled to be there, including MOI!! The bailiff informed us that 2 cases were on the docket…They divided us into 2 groups of 26 (the red badges and the blue badges..like back when they divided us into volleyball teams and gave us red and blue shirts)..I was a red, and we were ushered up the beautiful marble steps to Judge Klein’s courtroom for jury selection…

Judge Klein informed us that this was a DUI case, and only 6, NOT 12, jurors were needed..(All of us secretly smirked…those odds were much better for going home today)..By noon, they had chosen 4 out of 6.  I went to lunch feeling very cocky. I even called Dennis and said, and I quote, “This is a cake walk..They only need 2  more jurors and there are 12 of us left…no problem, I’ll be home shortly”.  Bad omen. Never assume anything…We all know what the first 3 letters of THAT word are..Confused smile

Suffice to say that after lunch another juror was chosen and there was only one space left to be filled…I smiled to myself and began to nod off, waiting to hear the wonderful words “The rest of you are now dismissed”…Instead, I heard the bailiff called out,  “Potential juror JN1-95, step to the jurors box for questioning, please!”  Holy crap, that’s me…Long story short, I was chosen as Juror #6…I even pulled out the “My son-in-law is a detective in Glenview, IL” card…Nope, not working…I have been called 3 times in 12 years to jury duty and chosen every darn time!! I cannot look THAT honest!! I knew I should have worn my Maxine outfit!  The trial was 2 days long, and I really have to admit…interesting…The wheels of justice turning is never a boring event…I did my patriotic and civic duty..albeit kicking and screaming.

If you are wondering about the progress of my fountain…there it is…a work in progress..It is not done yet, and McGyver is considering moving it up to the deck…I will keep you posted..Sorry it is so long between blogs…but life is continually getting in the way of my fun…C'est la vie, right??  Hopefully things will slow up and the merry go round will let me jump off occasionally…Thanks for your patience!

  1. Looks like you guys and Uncle Jr.& Aunt Jean had a great time at the show. I hope your jury duty is over now for awhile, If I ever get summoned I will have to wear a tee shirt that says "Hang em high." Don't know about the fountain, after a couple beers you'll be running to pee every five minutes. Be safe out there. Sam & Donna....

  2. If the judge only read your blog he would have to think twice about it.

  3. You'll have to get a T-shirt with the peace sign and a marijuana plant on it to get out of jury duty!

What a great event for your Uncle Junior and the rest of the vets.
