Saturday night was a very special “date night” for us. We attended Dennis’ Fiftieth High School Class Reunion!! There were 58 “Seniors” in that graduating class. Twelve of those are now deceased, and Saturday night 27 real “Seniors” and their significant others (a few singles) , gathered to celebrate the fact they were here, and still able to sit up and take nourishment…myself included.
And now, I give to you the President and Vice President of Sandwich High School’s class of 1960…
Left is Ron Miller, Class President..Right is Dennis Cave, Class Vice President …(or was it President of Vice..?) Those are two long ,tall drinks of water, right there….Ron now owns the bowling alley in Sandwich, and Dennis…well, I guess he just owns me.
THE DYNAMIC PRES. AND VP…50 YEARS LATER!!!
….And here is something you don’t see listed as part of the high school curriculum anymore….
This is a photo of…. Rifle Club….yep….that’s what I said…A club where kids learned to shoot a gun and all about gun safety…They actually had target practice in the gymnasium….. That would be my own McGuyver, back row, 3rd from the left…(Notice he now has his glasses on, so he can actually SEE the target…)
It turns out that Dennis was also a “thespian”, so to speak…He was in the Senior Class play…
Tallest, back row, major crew cut, sweater vest and tie, eyes the color of Paul Neuman’s, with Alfred E. Neumann ears….Where was I when all of this was going on???…..I had just moved to Sandwich, IL….the smallest one in the Sandwich Jr. High School 7th grade class…. We didn’t “hook up” until 1969…any sooner than that and my Dad would have sent him packing!
(Notice Dennis wears his glasses ONLY when he feels like it).
Dennis found his athletic prowess in track and field…above, right…..
This was when the sport of pole vaulting involved using steel poles, and they didn’t flex like the fiberglass do now.You could actually do bodily harm to certain areas of your anatomy….and doing it was lots harder than now…Note….Glasses on again…no, really?? …for SPORTS???? I just know those weren’t the kind of glasses with the strap around your head that you have to wear now!
So…., right after graduation, Den enlisted in the Air Force. He and another guy enlisted together on the “buddy system”…However his “buddy” backed out of the together stuff, and McGuyver took the bus ride on his own….and therein lies another whole story that would take us in a totally different direction!
The reunion was really lots of fun. I was not in high school with any of these “kids”. I graduated in 1966…Unfortunately for me, I fit right in with the 68 year olds, both in looks and memory loss. The SHS Class of 1960 had Sandwich Illinois’ first AFS (American Field Service) student…also known as a foreign exchange student…Her name was Helle , and she flew here from Denmark especially for this reunion….Dennis dated her for a while….hadn't’ seen her since graduation, so it was really neat that Helle came for this reunion…
Left to right …Judy Legner Fish , Helle and Dennis…..Judy was Helle’s “American sister”. Helle lived with the Legner family for the whole school year while she attended SHS. Her husband was unable to make this trip with her due to illness, but we were all very happy that Helle came anyway…
A FEW CANDIDS FROM THE PARTY…….YOU HAVE NO IDEA WHO ANYONE IS….WELL, MAYBE YOU KNOW “A COUPLE”.
McGuyver and I can “clean up” fairly well, we just don’t do it very often…. I fight it like crazy when I have to put on any restrictive clothing . This includes anything with stays, spandex , zippers and snaps, or shoes with heels over 1/16th inch..Give me my elastic waste jeans , T-shirts and sweats , anyday!!….and, of course, I am most comfy in my “uniforms”….
SANDWICH HIGH SCHOOL CLASS OF 1960
Thanks for a great time…and we’ll see you at the 55th!!!!!
What a combination! Pole vaulting, acting and shooting. A man for all seasons. :)
ReplyDeleteLooks like Dennis was pretty active in high school - a bit of everything.
ReplyDeleteMy 50th High School reunion is next year here in Victoria. I haven't been to one in the previous 49 years and I'll be "missing" from the 50th as well.
Glad you guys had fun and seemed to enjoy it. Personally, I can't stand them!
Looks like you did a lot of digging through old photo albums & that takes a bit of fine finiggling to get all that into a post. Always fun to look back on old school days for sure. I have never been to a class reunion. Any class I was ever in has long since been de-classed by now.
ReplyDeleteWhat a great gathering of the "old" classmates. :)
ReplyDeleteDennis was quite a busy McGuyver even then with all of those activities. Glad you had such a great time.
What a great post. Looks like you married the most popular in high school. You gotta love a school where a guy can be both a jock AND a thespian. ;)
ReplyDeleteGreat pics, it looks like a good time was had by all. I've never been to my reunions, mostly because they're 2,000 miles from here. It would be fun to make just one.
Take care,
Connie
First thank Dennis for his service.
ReplyDeleteWow Dennis has aged well cosidering what he has been through since 1969.
YOU GUYS HIT THE NAIL RIGHT ON THE HEAD!!!
