Well, since Saturday was our “date night” , and I wasn’t yet willing to throw in the towel on that, we went down to our local “joint” for a cocktail to be followed by some carry-outs. I did my shower routine (which I am about to alter), put on some clean clothes, a little make-up and my uniquely stylish (NOT!) blue Herman Munster boot. Dennis pulled my chariot out of the garage right up to the back deck for me. Just getting down the deck steps is a challenge. I hang on to Den (or rather HE hangs on to ME) by the elbow on my left side, and I hang onto the railing with my right arm…and away I hop, down the 4 steps. I only wish it were that easy. All this hopping on my left hip is taking it’s toll, and I have already mentioned the abuse to my hands and wrists.
Now, I realize all of this is my big idea, so I do not complain. After the steps, I have to haul my ever larger arse up and into our quite tall truck. This is where McGuvyer almost has to lift me..It is a huge jump for me to just get my left foot onto the step pipe…Never the less, I got in and settled, with my ever present walker in the back seat. Right here I have to say that I have resorted to doing exactly what I vowed I would not do…I lashed a bag onto the walker to facilitate bringing my “stuff” with me…AND, I now have a WalMart bag tied to the front of it, for other little things I might need. I am now a full blown 63 year old “Hop-Along Walker ”user!
We got downtown,(about 3 blocks from our house), and pulled into a parking spot on a side street. We could not park out front, where there is parallel parking only . The reason for that is because the “suicide” doors of our GMC cannot swing wide enough for me to get out when parked right next to another car. Soooo…getting to the entrance of Don’s Old Tyme Inn was quite a walk for me. I also didn’t realize that the entrance inside Don’s slopes downward. (This place has been here forever and it still has the original old wood floors)…..I almost did a header before I even got to the bar stool for my first (and last) glass of wine!
Long story longer…By the time I finally got settled and had nestled my blue boot and walker up next to the brass rail, I was virtually exhausted!! We had our cocktail hour, Den helped me lope back to the truck , got me in …drove us home, got me out…got me up the back deck steps into the house…and I flopped into a chair…NOT WORTH IT!! I called in carry-out fish orders and Den went and got it..Whew!
I have now made the executive decision (and a wise one, for a change), that I will limit my “Hop-Along Walker” jaunts to the inside of our house, the front screened porch and the back deck table and chairs…This old lady has finally realized she just cannot do some things she used to…FOR NOW!!
AFTER ALL, THIS ISN’T A BAD VIEW FROM OUR DECK, RIGHT?? OUR NEIGHBORS HAVE A LOVELY YARD FULL OF FLOWERS, AND I WILL ENJOY THE VIEW FROM THE SHADE OF OUR UMBRELLA TABLE.
I have discovered one very neat thing…I found out that I can scoot all over the kitchen in our rolling computer chair!! This is a real boon for me…I can get to anything I need to in the kitchen without jumping around. I just sit in the big black rolling chair and , using my good foot, I can do any damage I want to in the kitchen!! Hey, maybe this could become a new competition event..Rolling computer chair races…I’M IN!!
My YaYa friend brought us over some wonderful Mexican layered dip, chips, veggie pizza..AND…some frozen strawberry Vodka drinks….I found that I could use my new best friend, the black chair, put my foot up, and enjoy this delightful frozen drink while watching “The Voice” on the kitchen TV…
…This is what I call “being incapacitated and making the best of it!”…And I will now be satisfied being “housebound” until next Monday, my next Doc appt…(He better let me put some weight on this puppy, or I my head will spin and I will spew green vomit…REALLY…I WILL!!)
SAW THIS LITTLE HUMMER ON THE FEEDER THIS AM WHEN I HOBBLED INTO THE KITCHEN…I THINK IT’S A GOOD OMEN….
OK, I just sent Dennis to WalMart with a grocery list..So far, my cell phone has not gone off…It will totally shock me if he gets completely through my list without having a “WalMart meltdown moment” and speed dialing me ! (tee hee)..
Thanks to all you blog readers for sticking with my self absorbing blogs…Please know that I really DO know how damn lucky I am to be only temporarily laid up…and not looking at this long term like so many people do…I have a new found compassion for anyone who is having ANY mobility issues…Also, please know that I mean no disrespect to those who are in this situation…I just find that humor is the way I deal with this stuff…It’s how I roll (LITERALLY!!!!)
I for one am enjoying your blogs and do not think you are self-absorbed...just tellin it like it is!! I really hate when I can't do something, even if it is only tmeporary, but sometimes ya just gotta listen to your body (dang 'em anyway).
ReplyDeleteComputer chair races could catch on big...collect an entry fee and you could become rich!
Hope you continue to get better and are back on your feet soon.
Hey there, Gimpy! Those chair races will be an easy for one Suzy to win! She's been chair-scooting around our kitchen at home (and to a much smaller extent) the kitchen in our rolling home for a long time. Her ability to walk or even stand for any length of time is minimal, so we have Big Red, her mobility scooter, we use the motorized shopping carts at every opportunity. She's my winner, all right!
ReplyDeleteI have had dates I had to carry out of bars before, boy that bring's back old memories.
ReplyDeleteYour blogs are wonderful and humor is the best medicine!! You have also found some new creative juices in using your black rolling chair!! Great idea!!
ReplyDeleteI hope you can get that green light from the Dr. next week. :-) It has to be frustrating!

ReplyDeleteLets hear it for proof reading!!
Your foot is more exciting than my lack of electricity. :)

ReplyDeleteYou certainly are taking this foot problem well. Sure hope your next Doctor's appointment brings you good news so you can at least walk a bit. Although I kind of like the idea of being able to race around on wheels!
